We do a screening test to find children who have a high risk of
developing diabetes. All children from Germany, Austria, the UK,
the USA and Canada can participate if they

details in the form in which you sent them and in an electronic
database during the study and will destroy or delete them when the
study has finished. We need the information in order to contact you and
check the conditions for the screening, and also for statistical and
scientific purpose.

| • | There is currently no established treatment for children at high genetic risk of developing diabetes but the treatment during the study might possibly prevent the onset of the disease. |
| • | The treatment and the examinations during the study are free. |
| • | We will examine your child at regular intervals. Thus, if your child develops diabetes, we will be able to detect the onset of diabetes before any of the typical symptoms show, which will reduce the risk of complications. |
| • | In the event that your child develops diabetes during the Pre-POINT study we will be able to provide you with information about other studies that could affect the course of the disease. |

It is very important that we receive the probes before your child turns 7 years old.
We will ask you to sign the informed consent as the child’s parents or the legal guardians. Moreover we will ask you to fill in a questionnaire about your child. If your child is in the higher genetic risk category for getting type 1 diabetes we will inform you within 6 weeks at a face-to-face meeting or by telephone. In any case you will also receive a letter from us containing the test result.

If your child does not have any diabetes risk genes, his/her diabetes risk is not high enough to participate in the Pre-POINT study.
... if your child has diabetes risk genes and several relatives have type 1 diabetes?
If your child has these diabetes risk genes and two or more family members (father, mother or siblings) already have type 1 diabetes, your child’s genetic risk of diabetes is very high. If your child has not yet developed any antibodies, he or she can participate in the Pre-POINT study.
... if your child has diabetes risk genes and has only one brother or sister with type 1 diabetes?
If your child has diabetes risk genes and one sibling in the family has type 1 diabetes, we also need to look at the diabetes risk genes of the brother or sister who has type 1 diabetes and of both parents. The screening procedure will be the same as for the child who might be eligible to take part in the study.
The genetic diabetes risk of your child is considered very high if we can show that both your child and his/her brother or sister with type 1 diabetes have the same diabetes risk genes. If so, we will send you further information about the next stage of the study and another consent form. If your child has a very high genetic diabetes risk and has no diabetes autoantibodies in the blood, your child will be able to take part in the study.
